William Barak

Born Beruk in September 1823 at Brushy Creek in the Yarra Valley, William Barak was the last Ngurungaeta of the Wurundjeri-willam clan, a tracker who helped find Ned Kelly and the man who led 22 people on foot to Parliament House in 1881 to save Coranderrk from closure. Forbidden from practising ceremonies at the reserve, he preserved them in more than fifty drawings in charcoal, ochre and watercolour, now held at the NGV, NGA and in collections across Australia and Europe.
