This is a painting of the Ernabella area, This is a beautiful part of the APY Lands with Puli tjuta (big mountains), Karru (creek) full of running water after the rain comes, Tjanpi (grass), Tali (sand hills). Makiniti was born here and grew up going out bush with her father and learning about the country for food, where to go for maku (witchetty grub), kumpurranpa (bush tomato), Tjala (honey ant), Mai Tjuta (lots of food).

Makinti came to the art centre as a young girl when it was still the craft room. Ernabella Arts was her first job after leaving school. Makinti started as an artist doing batik and painting. She also worked closely with Winifred Hilliard who started the craft room.
Makinti did the wages every week and she was in charge of the art centre when Winifred went away. As well as being an artist, Makinti wears many hats in the community including a respected leader, translator, health worker and
Director of the Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Education Commitee (PYEC). Makinti has played a key role in the translation of the bible into Pitjantjatjara. In 2022 she was the Chair of Ernabella Arts.

Iwiṟi was established by Aṉangu in 2018, many of whom had been forced to move to Adelaide due to chronic health conditions and lack of services in their home communities. Living far from their traditional homelands, Anangu were concerned about the cultural and social isolation they were experiencing and saw a need to act.  Iwiri was formed initially to help retain, promote and transmit Anangu culture and language through the areas of arts, language, knowledge and community. Since then Iwiṟi has grown rapidly into an organization that delivers  a range of programs that aim to strengthen and advance Aṉangu wellbeing.

Iwiri strengthens the Aṉangu community through cultural and arts activities, creating employment opportunities and enterprise development. We want our young people to be strong in their language and culture and to take up opportunities to work in our community.
