Kaltjiti Arts: Aboriginal Art from the APY Lands, South Australia

Kaltjiti Arts and Crafts sits on the banks of Officer Creek, a watercourse that runs dry except in periods of high rainfall, in the community of Kaltjiti (Fregon) in the APY Lands of South Australia. The creek flows from Mount Woodroffe, the highest mountain in South Australia, through the plains south of the Musgrave Ranges. The community, about 350 people, is one of the six main communities on the APY Lands, roughly 500 kilometres southwest of Alice Springs.

The art history here runs to 1974, when Kaltjiti women began batik work inspired by the program established at nearby Ernabella three years earlier. Women such as Inawinytji Williamson, who learned batik at Ernabella, moved to Kaltjiti and became central to establishing the art centre. From those textile beginnings, the practice developed into the acrylic on linen work the centre is now known for internationally. Senior male artists Witjiti George and Taylor Copper work alongside senior women Manitjanu Lennon, Imitjala Curley, Matjangka Norris, and Kathy Maringka, all exploring Tjukurpa of the region. Senior artists work together on collaborative major works, using these projects to teach younger generations painting technique and storytelling.

The paintings are deliberate and confident — saturated colour combinations on linen, every mark rendered with culture and country in mind. Tjukurpa stories become physical representations, and when an artist completes a strong work they may declare "kuruntu palyani" — a painting from the heart. Kaltjiti Arts is a member of the APY Art Centre Collective. Visitors are welcome by arrangement with the art centre. A permit is required to visit the APY Lands.
