Hopevale Arts and Culture Centre: Guugu Yimithirr Art from Hope Vale, Queensland

Hopevale Arts and Culture Centre opened in 2009 at 1 Flierl Street, Hope Vale, on Cape York Peninsula about 46 kilometres northwest of Cooktown. The address carries history: the street is named after Johann Flierl, the Lutheran missionary who established the original Cape Bedford Mission in 1886 on the beach at Elim. In May 1942, the entire population of 286 was evacuated south by the military, with the German missionaries interned. Most people were sent to Woorabinda near Rockhampton, where 28 died in the first month alone. A work crew returned in 1949 to find the mission severely damaged. The community rebuilt on a new site on the Endeavour River, and the present Hope Vale was established. Today it is the oldest continuing mission community in North Queensland, governed by and for Guugu Yimithirr people, with the Thubi Warra people recognised as Traditional Owners.

The art centre is a not-for-profit organisation governed by the Guugu Yimithirr community, with a board of six local directors elected annually. Artists work in painting, textiles, jewellery, and weaving. The attached Nganthanun Bmawi-Bayan Gallery sells locally made arts and crafts and is open Monday to Thursday. Artist Doreen Hart describes the centre this way: "Our art centre is a place that helps us relax and unwind. It's a place where art is created, and lasting friendships are formed. I have to say this is a place where magic happens." Senior artists include Daisy Hamlot (Thuupi Warra Elder), Gertie Deeral (Dingaal Elder), Dora Deemal, and Grace Rosendale.
