Art Galleries in Launceston, Tasmania

Launceston has a compact but varied art scene, from QVMAG's colonial and contemporary Tasmanian collections to artist-run spaces and commercial galleries showing local and interstate work. ART ARK® is the only gallery in the city dedicated exclusively to Aboriginal art from remote community art centres.

1. Queen Victoria Museum & Art Gallery (QVMAG)

Art Gallery: 2 Wellington Street, Launceston
Museum: 2 Invermay Road, Inveresk, Launceston

One of Australia's oldest regional museums, QVMAG operates across two sites. The Wellington Street gallery holds an extensive collection of Tasmanian art spanning colonial and contemporary works. The Inveresk site covers natural history, technology, and industrial heritage.

2. ART ARK®

Location: Level 1, 160–162 Cimitiere Street, Launceston

ART ARK® is dedicated to Aboriginal art from remote community-run art centres. The gallery represents paintings, sculptures, and prints, with each work traceable to its artist and community of origin.

3. Sawtooth ARI

Location: 12 Invermay Road, Inveresk, Launceston

Sawtooth ARI (Artist-Run Initiative) is focused on emerging and experimental artists. The gallery runs exhibitions, artist talks, and workshops in the Inveresk precinct.

4. Madeline Gordon Gallery

Location: 57 George Street, Newstead, Launceston

Formerly Gallery Pejean, the space was taken over by Madeline Gordon and relaunched under her name. The gallery shows contemporary work by both established and emerging artists, with a focus on bringing significant interstate and international exhibitions to Launceston.

5. 1842 Gallery

Location: 41–43 St John Street, Launceston

Housed in a heritage-listed building, 1842 Gallery shows work by emerging and established local artists. The fine furniture collection reflects Tasmania's reputation for woodcraft and design.

6. Greenoaks Gallery

Location: 2 St Georges Square, Launceston

A small independent gallery focused on local Tasmanian artists, showing paintings, sculptures, and prints.

7. The Design Centre Tasmania

Location: Corner of Tamar and Brisbane Streets, City Park, Launceston

The Design Centre Tasmania showcases Tasmanian design with a particular emphasis on woodcraft. Rotating exhibitions highlight the craftsmanship and innovation of local designers.

8. Academy Gallery (University of Tasmania)

Location: Invermay Road, Launceston

Part of UTAS's School of Creative Arts and Media, the Academy Gallery exhibits works by students, staff, and visiting artists, with a focus on contemporary and experimental practice.
