Life is better with art

The Gab Titui Cultural Centre

The Gab Titui Cultural Centre is a contemporary art gallery and repository located on Thursday Island

The centre aims to contribute to the preservation and revitalisation of the region’s rich cultures, and to the development and promotion of local Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal art.

Providing visitors with a unique insight into the vibrant art and culture of the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area, the Gab Titui Cultural Centre's Wabunaw Geth gallery, the main gallery space, hosts a changing program of exhibitions. These exhibitions display artworks including sculptures, headdresses, intricate lino-cut prints, wood carvings, and paintings, as well as jewellery made from local materials such as pearl and sea shells. The artworks on display represent the unique Indigenous cultures of the surrounding communities and illustrate Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal myths, legends, and connections to the sea and land.

The spirit of the Torres Strait comes alive during exhibition openings, where traditional dancers relay stories from the different islands through dynamic performances, distinctive music, and songs in the outdoor performance area. These events offer a profound connection to the living culture of the Torres Strait, providing a deeper understanding of the traditions and stories that have shaped this vibrant region.

The centre hosts a variety of cultural events, workshops, and performances that engage both locals and visitors, offering opportunities to learn about traditional practices, storytelling, and the unique heritage of the Torres Strait.

The community of Thursday Island and the broader Torres Strait region is integral to the success of Gab Titui. The centre supports the development of local artists by providing opportunities to exhibit their work, participate in residencies, and engage in professional development. This nurturing environment helps to sustain the rich artistic traditions of the region while fostering new talent.

Visitors to Gab Titui can also explore the centre's outdoor areas, which offer stunning views of the surrounding waters. These spaces are perfect for experiencing the natural beauty of the Torres Strait while enjoying the cultural activities and exhibitions on offer.
