Warlukurlangu Aboriginal Art centre building in Yuendumu

If you're in Yuendumu, you should definitely stop by the Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Art centre and gallery.

This centre offers exhibitions, workshops, and other events, and is home to many exceptional Aboriginal artists. Many of their works are available for purchase and have achieved national and international recognition. Their work has been published in a variety of publications and has been featured in hundreds of exhibitions.

This wonderful Aboriginal Art centre was founded in 1985 by a group of Aboriginal artists and is 100% owned by them. The artwork is sold in various galleries and online, and the profit is used to support community programs. For example, the Warlukurlangu Artists run a program to feed and care for stray dogs in the community. It also funds veterinary visits to the area to help treat dogs.

The Aboriginal artists at the Warlukurlangu Art Centre are known for their bright and vibrant palettes that showcase their expanded technical range and style. They are also involved in community activities, including supporting the Kurdu Kurdukurlangu Childcare Centre and funding the Shalom Gamaroda Scholarship Fund for Indigenous students at the University of New South Wales.

Warlukurlangu artists are proud of the fact that the art centre is run by the local community and is operated by them. The stunning and colourful works created by these talented artists are a reflection of the local iconography and Dreaming stories of the region and are widely admired. The name "Warlukurlangu" means "belonging to fire", which explains the origin of the art centre.

The Art Centre's mission is to protect and transmit the traditional knowledge of their culture and to engage the younger generation. The artists want to keep their communities alive and active whilst also supporting themselves as artists to support their families. This is a great place to visit if you're visiting the area.
